Mpox

Mpox is a disease caused by the mpox virus. Mpox virus is from the same family of viruses as the smallpox virus. Mpox can spread from infected humans, animals, and materials contaminated with the virus. Use the resources below for more information.

Recent Updates

  • August 13th, Africa CDC declared its first public health emergency of continental security amid a complex and worsening mpox situation in Africa, involving the novel clade 1b virus.
  • August 14th, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox outbreak a public health emergency of international concern.
  • August 15th, Sweden's public health agency reported a case of mpox caused by novel clade 1. Sweden is the first country outside of Africa to report a case. The case patient had recently visited Africa.
  • August 20th, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced an additional $35 million to support mpox outbreak response in Africa. 
  • August 22nd, another mpox clade 1b case has been confirmed in a European traveler from Africa to Thailand.
  • August 26th, the WHO launched a global strategic preparedness and response plan to stop outbreaks of human-to-human transmission of mpox.
